Talk To The Hand

Its the usual season of jobless ppl tryin to search for whatever tht pays the most and the least in workload. So some might suggest "How bout event jobs? I heard they pay alot".

"A fren of mine got pay a few hundred by just doin that"
"This job offers a high pay by just working a few hours!"
"i heard this job blablabla"

You'll get the idea how words went around. But the truth is, event jobs are seasonal and hard to get. Unless ur a hot chick tho. Darn unfair rite? lol

Anyway, I was browsing thru the classified section of the papers. Hey,whats this?

// Event & Advertising Company.RM1600-Rm2100. 25 available vacancies. Position offered: Advertising trainee, Event Assistant, Marketing etc etc.//

Wow, not bad tho. Low requirements and best of all...its only 10 mins walk from my house!! Being a rational jobless being, of course I'll call them up. Seemed like the best deal ever. So this guy picked up and asked me to come for an interview later on

It was a quiet small office space. All i see was a simple office table with a clerk. On my right were two rooms and another door on my left. Oh yeah, there loads of movie posters hanging along the 4 walls. Terminator, Blood Rayne,Chicken Little...just to name a few.

After filling up a form, i met with this guy,the interviewer. So he started talking bout what the company does. In short, basically its an event, advertising and fund-raising company. Their purpose and objective is to bring up a brand or company's name so it will be recognisable to public. Sounds fair right? So he told me to be probationer on the coming Monday,9.15-6.15 and then it will be the second interview at the end of the day.

The day arrives, I went up to the office, saw 2 other guys and a gal sitting down there. Pretty obvious they're in the same position as me. What I noticed was, there's this loud dance music goin on in the left room. You know...those highly fast bass beats music and remix. And there's voices of ppl talking loudly inside. But then, who wouldnt talk like that when there's such music goin on.

The guy who interviewed me ( i assumed he's the manager) went into that room and music were turned off. So there was quite a long briefing inside and all of a sudden, they started the 'motivational' reply cheer.
Its somethin like
"Who is the best?!"
Everyone: "We Are!!!"

Haha, generally its like that. Although i cant quite hear what they are shouting bout.
Then the manager came out, and introduce to us our trainer who will be leading us for the entire day.

My trainer was this gal, same age, who joined the company bout 2 months ago. So she went and drove me and another guy to Bangsar. While on the way, she told me all kind of stuffs relating to this job. It was said that career advancement in this company is fast and there's ppl around age 19 who already able to buy a car. Overseas company trips, huge incentives etc etc etc.

At this point, i was still quite puzzled what we need to do. She just said, "i'll show u later on".
Went there, parked the car then we went to a mamak stall. They took out a folder, wore a tag
and approach a customer whose sitting there. This was her exact script:

"Good morning mister...NO, dont worry. I'm not tryin to sell you anything! Have you heard of the spastic children? No? These are the children who suffer from brain damage. [Hands out a square car sticker] This is for you sir, there's the address and telephone number. Currently the Spastic Children Association have more than 250 children. Dont worry mister, I'm not asking for your 200 or 300. But by donating Rm10, you will be able to help one child with food and medication for a week. Its like adopting a child for a week. So would you like to help 2 or 3 children?"

If yes, then job well done and save up ur speeching effort
If not:
"Thank you for your time sir. [Take back the square car sticker] I'm sorry sir but there's a receipt of RM10 behind the sticker. So we have to take it back"

NO NO NO NO NO...this is what u call an event company!!??
Its like a nightmare came true! The moment she was saying the 'script', I was hoping so hard it wasn't what I thought it will be.

Talk bout the job which will lower your self-esteem the most in human history. There's a small sheet of paper to record down how many ppl we approached and how many actually donated for it. Guess what? Whole day at Bangsar, the record was 400+ ppl we approached and bout 40 who bought the sticker. It wasnt all bad for the sales record i must say. But I can guarantee that 9 out 10 people out there hates us. Btw, that explains how i remember her script so well, coz she repeated 400+ friggin times!!!

Here are a few remarkable responds we got:
  • I would prefer to go to the center myself
  • Please go away, you are disturbing us
  • Wait....you are trying to sell us the small car sticker worth RM10 right? Coz i just bought it last week
  • You already approached us!
  • We are from Pantai Hospital. I would say that this is unnecessary as we are doing our part in the hospital as well. If you really need funds, please write to our Resource Department as we blablablablablabla. (I cant remember the rest, lol)
So why am I complaining bout this job again? Cause I dont feel good the moment i found out whats going on as well as seeing the reaction of other ppl.
Yeah, its good pay but how am I suppose to go on with it when myself was agreeing with what the people are saying??

And secondly, I DOUBT all the donations will go to the center.
Here's my logic and understanding for the situation here.
1) For a NGO association like this, they probably wouldnt be paying for a company's services to advertise for them.
2) Neither will an advertising business company like this would do a free advertisement for them. This project is ongoing for the next 5 months btw.
3) The only solution to benefit both sides is... The association will permit any usage of their name to spread the awareness (giving passes and letters to prove we are volunteers from the center). In order to return the favour for the advertisement, the company will take the profit, which will be the donation.

I've asked my trainer regarding how the company earns its money, she gave me some indirect misleading reply and went on talking bout the incentives
So here's the payment we should be gettin for the first 2 months

Basic RM1300 + Incentives (refer below)

Earns Rm7500/month for the company (by the donation collection of course) -> Rm200
...Rm8500-> Rm400
...Rm9500->Rm600
...Rm10500->Rm800

and the list goes on. No doubt its some good money to be earned there.

So after the grueling day of collecting 'donations', went back to the office for the so-called second interview. Basically he just asked how was everything and stuffs. Said I've passed the probation and will be seeing me 8.30 next morning. Was so darn tired, while he was happily yapping away. I didnt even know what I've answered him =P

The next morning at 8 am,
Me on the phone: Hello, I would like to inform you that I'm not interested in the job that I've been offered.
Clerk: Ok, thank you

Thats it. I've felt terrible and aint right for doin tht job =)

Older sis: Lol, served you right for shutting them down each time they approached our table. Now that you've landed into one

Second sis: Everyone will just say "Talk to the hand" to ya. Haha

could it be that they standardize the scripts? 'cause i was approached too and what she said was exactly (and i mean word for word) what you wrote. so very weird.

tiff.

that's why I never really trust enough to give these kind of 'spontaneous donations'. :P

I dont think they standardize it. Probably one follows another. If i'm doin the job now, i'll be using exactly the same script my trainer used. Hehe. Could be the same gal afterall

Even dvd, kuih and lottery sellers got turned down by me. Whats more for them. Lol

Even after 2 years, now 2009, I had this kind of experience, seeing someone approach me once in Jaya One, and once at Subway! Somehow, being uncertain for the first time I donated RM10, and not for the second time, I'm getting believe this is really a big scam. And the people that are selling this 'Car Stickers' are just those 17-19 young boys and girls, well versed in English, showing files, and picture and even a letter acknowledgement from State Minister (fake one?) & IC ?

Yeah, loads of school leaver will take up such job coz of the lucrative incentive they get. My best guess is that, both the agency and the company have the same agreement for the collection, hence providing them all the necessary documentations. And the company get certain cut from the 'donations' collected.
